Excellent achievement in both academic and vocational subjects. We are one of the highest performing state-funded
Sixth Forms in the North West
Outstanding teaching and learning is at the heart of the Academy’s Sixth Form experience. You will find your lessons are interesting, innovative and individualised. We place a lot of emphasis on enabling you to become an independent learner with the study skills, know-how and confidence to think for yourself and to manage your own learning programme.
Your friendly, caring, experienced and specialist teachers will take the time to work with you on a one-to-one basis to help you achieve this. When the time comes, we want you to be well prepared for higher education or your first proper job and be well on your way to success.
Excellent Value Added, showing that we add more academic value than any other local sixth form provision
The Department for Education’s 2017 Performance Tables show that our A Level and BTEC students make the most progress compared with every other post-16 provider in Blackburn with Darwen. These also show that we are one of the top performing Sixth Forms in Lancashire. This means our students significantly exceed the A Level and BTEC grades predicted by ALPS from their GCSE results.
Academic and vocational subjects are offered and can be combined
You can choose from over 30 A Levels and Level 3 BTECs, including some not offered elsewhere locally. You can also combine A Level and BTEC qualifications to suit your personal strengths. In addition, we provide a three year programme for students who still wish to go to university, secure a higher apprenticeship or enter high quality employment but who gain less than five Cs or 4s at GCSE.
In 2017, 67% of students went on to university to complete a range of
degree courses including Medicine, Computer Science, Biomedical
Science, Art & Design, Graphic Design and English Literature
You will receive outstanding help when applying for university, further training or employment. More than 70% of Leavers progress to university each year, including Oxbridge, the Russell Group of universities and specialist vocational colleges; many of these students are the first person in their family to complete a Higher Education degree.
Ofsted graded DACA as Good in May 2017 and we are aiming to become Outstanding in our next inspection
We are a small local sixth form provision when compared to some of the large Colleges; this means that we know all our students very well and can personalise their learning, their curriculum and the support that they receive.
You will receive the highest quality teaching, care and guidance. We regard every student as special, unique and talented and our experienced, friendly and caring staff take the time to get to know the real you. We always go ‘the extra mile’ to help you fulfil your potential
An experienced pastoral team who will help you with university and career choices as well as with study and personal support
We have plenty of people on hand to help you in any situation, including the Sixth Form Pastoral Manager, Sixth Form Progress Tutors, Student Services, professional counsellors and careers advisers. We also provide financial support through the student bursary to help with the costs of Post 16 education, such as transport costs and financial help for educational materials. Please contact us for an informal and confidential discussion.
There is a strong sense of community in the Sixth Form
Students make new friends quickly and there is a lively sociable feel to life in the Academy. In a survey at the end of the academic year students were overwhelmingly positive about their experience at the Academy’s Sixth Form. Students feel strongly that they are part of a caring and committed community and that this is a key factor in helping them to flourish.
Fantastic facilities available to our pupils
Our facilities are available five days a week, before, during and after school. We
offer a study area and sixth form cafe for students to undertake work.
We offer a range of enrichment activities including mentoring lower school students, sports, arts classes, charity work and overseas trips
You can choose from a wide range of complementary activities to boost your CV and university or employment application. You will be stretched and challenged in new ways. Our unique specialism of entrepreneurship will help you to develop skills and qualities looked for by universities and employers.
We believe in mutual respect for everyone
We embrace diversity and are strongly committed to equality of opportunity, regardless of gender, race, culture, sexual orientation or religious belief for all students, staff and the wider community.
